Progress Place Clubhouse: A Free Mental Health Recovery Program in Toronto

A Place Where You Belong

The Clubhouse at Progress Place is a recovery community built around a simple but powerful idea — that everyone has something to contribute, and that meaningful work and genuine community are essential to mental health recovery. We welcome adults 18+ living with a primary diagnosis of mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety.

How the Clubhouse Works

The Clubhouse is built around a "work-ordered day" — a structured, supportive environment where Members and staff work side by side as equals. There are no deadlines, no performance reviews and no time limits on membership. You show up when you can, contribute what you're able and stay for as long as the Clubhouse serves you.

This approach is internationally recognized and grounded in decades of research showing that meaningful engagement reduces hospitalizations and incarceration, builds resilience and confidence, and improves overall quality of life.

Members choose where they'd like to help out. There are three areas to work in:

Café: Help plan and prepare daily meals, look after the garden, run the boutique and support health and wellness activities.

Clerical: Answer phones, help with office tasks, write the weekly newsletter and support the day-to-day running of the Clubhouse.

First Floor: Welcome visitors, help with education programs, work on the Clubhouse podcast, Radio Totally Normal Toronto, create videos and graphics, and manage social media.

In addition to participating in the "work-ordered day", the Clubhouse offers Members a range of programs to meet their goals, including:

Young Adults

The Clubhouse’s Young Adult program connects Young Adult Members aged 18-35 with their peers. Many Young Adults expressed that their mental illness has changed their relationships with friends and family. By creating an open, non-judgmental forum through focused Young Adult tours, intake, weekly lunches and social outings, Members who have had similar struggles have an opportunity to foster a sense of community.

In 2024/25, 249 Young Adults participated in our Clubhouse Program.

The Clubhouse provides Young Adult Members with the following supports and opportunities:

  • Young Adult Lunch every Tuesday, where Young Adult Members share their experiences, celebrate achievements and plan the Young Adult Program.

  • Focused Young Adult Tour and Intake allows Young Adults to be fast-tracked into the program, reducing barriers to Membership.
